This is the intersection of E. Surfside and Bridgeport St. In 1963 the bar was on the right side of the picture but that building is gone and is now a parking lot. The Garrison's Gifts building across the street is also gone but has been replaced by another gift shop. According to Mel's research the bar was named the Playboy Lounge located at 3102 Surfside with Garrison's Gifts across the street at 3101. |

Viking Motor Inn... ...is in Portland on the eastern beginning of the old causeway to Corpus Christi and while we found it listed in CC City Directories, a street number was never given. It's just listed as on hwy. 181. Most of the building still exists as the America's Best Value Inn at 133 Hwy. 181. The circular restaurant is gone and a large portico has been stuck on the front. But the swimming pool is still there. We tried to find room 127 where Tod stayed but after several run-ins with security at the Nueces Bay Channel and the Aquarium I was getting paranoid and thought we were probably being watched on surveillance cameras and urged Mel to leave. Attempts to photograph the ships/harbor beyond the high bay bridge prompted a security guard to warn us away as that activity now violates Homeland Security protocol. |

The Cathedral on Upper Broadway is tough to photograph because of the narrow street and the trees. You can tell from the screen capture that the R66 crew probably used their largest wide angle lens to get this shot. Mel also tripped over several sleeping homeless people on the sidewalk while trying to shoot it. |

Joby Running Roger Mobley probably had fun doing this stunt. That slope is steeper than it looks. Mel kept making me do it over and over while he waited for the sun to break thru the clouds. Thanks Mel. |

H.E.B. Tennis Center... ...is located at 1520 W. Shely. We couldn't find the address at the CC Library while looking thru old city directories and phone books. But we found it easily in the CC yellowpages in our motel room. Duh-oh. Mel accidentally left his special, body pillow there and now must cry himself to sleep every night. |

The Channel Bridge... ...where Joby hid the bait bucket with his money now borders on the property of the CC Aquarium. I thought we would find the big boulder that Joby has his hand on but for some reason there were no longer any rocks that big. It looks like a lot of fill rock and concrete has been added when they built the Aquarium. While taking these shots we came to the attention of the Aquarium security cameras and before we could get back to our car a golf cart came shooting across the lawn in our direction. But, Mel talked our way out of this awkward moment and even got the guard to give us a ride back to our car by playing the disabled card because of his famous, bum leg. [ Editor's note: Ohio66 thinks that Mel and Mac found the can containing the money and split it with the guard who promised to keep it secret from the rest of us. ] |

The Nueces County Courthouse... ...has been vacant for at least 40 years. It is still unclear if it will be demolished or saved. The Ten Commandments tablet became the focal point of controversy in the 70s and was removed. |

Screen Cap Book As a guide to finding the filming locations, I made screen caps from the dvd and then printed them out on paper. I put the screen cap in the upper right corner of the page and then got maps of the area off the internet and glued them to the page under the screen cap. I put them in a three ring binder and carried it to each location to use for reference. No matter how many times I looked at them, I would discover something new each time and this helped, especially in verifying the Viking Motor Inn. — mac |

TV Cast, Crew Delay Arrival Until Friday The cast and crew of the “Route 66” television series will not arrive in Corpus Christi until tomorrow at 12 p.m., a spokesman said yesterday. Lou Weiner, publicity director, said the delay was caused by script revisions. “Filming of the first two episodes here will probably start at the H. E. Butt Tennis Court,” Sam Manners, executive in charge of production, said. “The time depends on when the rest of the cast gets here,” he said. Were Due Today They were originally scheduled to arrive today. The group will arrive in costume and go directly to the shooting location. Martin Milner, one of the two stars on the series, will be on the plane. The other, George Maharis, has been recuperating in New York from a hepatitis infection. It was not known whether he will be aboard the charter flight. The Red Carpet Committee will meet the plane at the airport along with Mayor Ben F. McDonald and officials of the Convention and Tourist Bureau. ‘Caravan’ Arrives Manners said a “traveling caravan” housing equipment and studio facilities has already arrived here. It includes five large vans and five Corvette sports cars. The sports cars are used to transport the stars and company executives from one location to another. The cast and crew comprise some sixty people. They are staying at the Viking Motor Hotel near Portland. Title for the first episode to be filmed here is “Can You See an Echo Come Back?” It is an original television play by Stirling Silliphant and will be directed by David Lowell Rich. ‘ROUTE 66’ Show Filmed Here Today A number of scenes featuring “Route 66” actors was being shot today in the downtown area, Robert Maharis, casting director, said. Maharis said Martin Milner, one of the regular stars of the national televised show, and guest star Roger Mobley, 14, will be in most of the scenes. Shooting will be at Corpus Christi Cathedral at Upper Broadway and Lipan, at a barber shop [unreadable] on Ayers. The cast and crew of the show arrived here from Hollywood yesterday and are expected to remain about two weeks to film possibly two shows. George Maharis, who co-stars with Milner, did not come. Production officials said he is in New York City, recuperating from a recent illness. Filming was done yesterday at H. E. Butt Tennis Center. |

The glamour of nationally-known television personalities and the excitement of filming an episode on location here fascinated hundreds of onlookers yesterday and Friday. ‘Route 66’ Writer Enjoys ‘Rat Race’ “ROUTE 66” will begin shooting another television episode tomorrow at Port Aransas. A week ago not a single word of the script had been put on paper. Stirling Silliphant, co-owner of the Screen Gems production, began writing it Monday and was scheduled to have it completed and ready for shooting yesterday. Of course, he already had the story in mind when he sat down to his typewriter. He had been mulling it over several days. MARTIN MILNER ‘Route 66’ Star Has Little Time To Rest The “Route 66” crew was all smiles this morning. The sky was clear; the sun was shining – perfect weather for filming outdoor scenes. Martin Milner, one of the stars of the television series shown here weekly over KZTV, appeared in a jovial mood as the crew shot scenes for the episode at Corn Products Refining Co. on Upriver Road. Milner, along with the others, has little time for relaxing on the set, however. Young Stars’ Careers Are Stepping Stone to High Hopes Leslye Hunter and Roger Mobley are on the way to making their “high apple pie in the sky hopes” come true. Their careers as child stars are only springboards for future plans. Ten year old Leslye has fond dreams of being a great actress. Roger, 14, wants to be a minister. Both children are currently appearing on the Route 66 episode which was filmed in Corpus Christi last week. For three years Leslye has appeared in Broadway shows and on television. She has had to make adjustments to new situations and new children that she would not have made if we had stayed in one city,” she said. When the company started for St. Louis in October, Mrs. Milner and the children went home to North Hollywood, Calif., because “Martin didn’t know what kind of accommodations we could find.” They stayed at home until January and then started back on the road.
